Small Black Holes in String Theory: An informal discussion

Supersymmetric elementary string states in the compactified heterotic string theory are described by small black holes with a zero area event horizon. I will discuss various aspects of this story. Then, I will explain our recent results, where we discuss how to compute the supersymmetric index of such elementary string states using the gravitational path integral.
