Longitudinal Spatial Compression of a Low-Energy Muon Beam

Standard muon beams have a relatively high energy and poor phase space quality. A new scheme for a μ+ beam had been simulated to be efficient to convert a surface muon beam to a low-energy muon beam. The basic idea is to stop a μ+ beam in He gas with a vertical density gradient inside a longitudinal magnetic field and to use additional, static electric fields to compress the muons into a small volume. As the first step of this scheme, we demonstrated the longitudinal compression of a muon beam stopped in helium gas. Experiment results show that a compression ratio of 3.8 can be reached.
