An introduction is given to the physics, the accelerator and detector design concepts for the Large Hadron Electron Collider (LHeC), which promises to enable luminous deep inelastic electron-proton and electron-ion scattering precision measurements to be pursued at TeV energies, when an about 60 GeV energy electron beam is combined with the LHC p/A beams.
