Can any effective field theory be UV completed in a consistent theory of quantum gravity? In this colloquium we will follow a journey through the Swampland program, which aims to determine the consistency constraints that quantum gravity imposes at low energies. In particular, we will focus on characterizing the energy scale at which quantum gravitational effects should become important, which is encoded by the Distance conjecture. We will review the evidence behind this swampland constraint in string theory and holography, as well as their phenomenological implications for Particle Physics and Cosmology.
