Description

The PICO Scientific Programme: The Seitz and Sounds of Dark Matter

Despite decades of active research, the identity of particle dark matter remains one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in modern physics.  The PICO collaboration contributes to the global search for dark matter through the operation of bubble chambers loaded with fluorinated Freons, allowing for high sensitivity to spin-dependent WIMP-proton interactions.  Operating at the SNOLAB underground facility in Sudbury, Canada, PICO-40L is the current-generation bubble chamber employing the so-called "Right-Side-Up" design, which inverts the inner detector compared to previous chambers.  The next generation of bubble chamber, PICO-500, is currently under construction at SNOLAB with a similar design to PICO-40L.  The increase in active mass of PICO-500 will allow the larger detector to reach the neutrino floor.  This seminar will discuss the principles of dark matter direct detection with bubble chambers, the current status of PICO-40L and PICO-500, and recent results from the PICO collaboration.
