Description
In relativistic heavy ion collisions and also in certain compact stars (magnetars), magnetic fields may get so strong that they have an impact on the dynamics of strong nuclear interactions. I discuss two examples where holographic gauge/gravity duality has recently been applied to analyse such effects of strong magnetic fields on chiral quark matter: the chiral magnetic effect in heavy ion collisions, which is claimed to have been observed experimentally already, and (inverse) magnetic catalysis at large quark chemical potential, which may affect the chiral phase transition in magnetized neutron stars.
