How to reach Pisa

By Air

Pisa Airport "Galileo Galilei" is the main destination in Tuscany and in central Italy (after Rome). Served by several airlines that operate hundred of weekly flights to national and international destinations, the airport is developing as one of the busiest in Italy thanks also to numerous companies offering a low cost alternative.
The airport is just 15 minutes far from the centre of the town by bus, train or taxi, plus regular trains from and to Florence, Lucca, Viareggio, and other cities. For more information visit the Galileo Galilei Aiport website.

By Train

Pisa is very well connected to Florence and is on the main line Rome-La Spezia. The city also serves Viareggio, Livorno, Pistoia, and Lucca. For more information and train timetable visit the Ferrovie dello Stato website
 
By Coach

The main services is operated by the partnership of Lazzi-CPT operating services to Florence, Lucca, Prato, Pistoia, Massa Carrara, Volterra, Livorno and many others.
 
By Car

Pisa is near the intersection of two highways: A12 north-south (Sestri Levante - Livorno) and A11 east-west (Pisa - Florence). Alternatives include the ss67 to Florence, and the ss1 (Via Aurelia) which connect Rome to La Spezia.
Parking in the city is normally rather expensive, depending on the area, with advance payment through automatic machines required in most zones. There is a free parking area at 10 min from the institute in “Via Paparelli
This parking is not usable on Wednesday and Saturday mornings because of a local market taking place.

Transport in Pisa city centre

Pisa has an extensive bus service operated by CPT (in Italian only). Tickets can be bought at tobacconists (1.20 Euro single ticket, less if you buy a 4-ticket or 10-ticket carnet), or on the bus (slightly more expensive, 2.00 Euro). If you plan to use the bus a lot you can buy a day travel card (3,70 Euro at tobacconists)

The airport is connected to the city (station and then the leaning tower area) through the LAM Rossa (red) line. To come to INFN you have to change bus at the station. The best connection is through the LAM Verde (green) line:
From the airport to the institute:
Airport —> Station: LAM Rossa
Station —> INFN: you have various options:
    1. LAM Verde or Line 2, take off at “De Amicis” stop and then walk 5 min (see map).
    2. Line 4, take off at “Buonarroti 1” stop, right in from the institute entrance
From the institute to the airport:
INFN —> Station: LAM Verde, board a “Buonarroti 3” stop, just outside the gate of the institute
Station —> Airport: LAM Rossa
