The pixel detector is the central component of the ATLAS inner tracker. With its minimal distance
to the interaction point of 5 cm, its spatial resolution of 10um X 115um, and its three space-points
per track it has a significant impact on the vertex resolution of the ATLAS detector. This allows
the application of such elaborate particle identification techniques as for example b-tagging.
Supplying power to the 1744 modules of the pixel detector and reading out hit data necessitates
an intricate network of services.
The ATLAS Pixel collabporation is working on the commissioning of this complex system since spring 2008.
Fine-tuning the parameters of the optical readout system, extensive studies of the pixel modules and
the environmental conditions are accompanied by adjustments to the various software packages involved
to the needs of operating a detector with about 80 million channels. Also the integration of the pixel
data acquisition software with the rest of the ATLAS systems and the combined data taking are not to be
underestimated.
This talk will give a short overview of the pixel detector system as well as the commissioning activities
and phases. Some of the latest results will be presented illustrating the status and performance of
the pixel detector.
