Description
The preferred solution of the atmospheric and solar neutrino problems via neutrino flavour oscillations requires the extension of the Standard Model (SM) with neutrino masses. Being gauge singlets, the appealing possibility of Majorana masses is only open to neutrinos amongst all the SM particles. Neutrinoless double beta decay is regarded as the best experimental probe of the Majorana character of neutrino masses. In the first part of the session we will review the possible extensions of the SM that can lead to Majorana masses for neutrinos and discuss their contributions to neutrinoless double beta decay (Enrique). The second part of the session will summarize the results from arXiv:0907.3143, where the smallness of neutrino masses is explained through high dimension operators with TeV scale mediators (Florian).
