The existence of ultra light scalar fields in particle physics and in several modifications of Einstein's theory of gravity is ubiquitous. These fields typically mediate a long-range fifth force and violate the equivalence principle. On the other hand, searches for these scalar fields over many years have found no result. After briefly mentioning the observational status I will discuss different mechanisms to hide these fields.
