Description

Neutrinos can escape dense environments, otherwise opaque to photons, and travel cosmic distances unscathed by background radiation or magnetic fields. They are ideal cosmic messengers and provide the smoking gun for the origin of the cosmic rays. With the discovery of the high-energy cosmic neutrino flux, we have embarked upon a new era in high-energy astrophysics with multimessenger observations. After near a decade of observation, for the first time, signs of anisotropy are emerging in the arrival direction of high-energy neutrinos detected by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. In this talk, I review recent developments in the search for the origin of high-energy neutrinos and present the prospects for the identification of neutrino emission from potential Galactic and extragalactic sources in current and future neutrino telescopes. In addition, I will highlight the opportunities offered by the study of the arrival direction of cosmic neutrinos to probe for physics beyond the Standard Model in the neutrino sector.
