The Upgrade of ATLAS for the Super-LHC: a Road towards New Physics in the 2020s

While the LHC is about to start operation and is expected to reach a luminosity of 1034mbox cm-2 s-1 by 2012, development work is already advancing to provide even higher luminosity to the experiments. This will increase the physics potential for processes with small cross sections. The higher levels of instantaneous and integrated luminosity, on the other hand, will pose stringent demands on the performance of the detectors, which will have to handle up to 20 times higher particle densities per beam crossing without significant loss of efficiency and resolution and will have to tolerate up to ten times higher radiation loads from neutrons and gammas. We will give a brief overview of hadron collider technology as it evolved towards the LHC/SLHC and will discuss the potential of future upgrades to higher collision energies. In the subsequent part of the talk we present the main features of the ATLAS detector and its present limitations w.r.t. increased luminosity levels. In view of the SLHC a number of R&D groups have formed to develop new concepts for detector technology in order to overcome the problems of high particle densities and to cope with the challenge of the background radiation in the experimental hall. A question of particular interest is the selectivity of the trigger system for interesting physics signatures and the ability of the readout system to process the very high data rates produced by the frontend of the various subdetectors. We will also present the overall time schedule of the project.
