Description
The bulk of Galactic cosmic rays is most likely accelerated in supernova remnants (SNRs). I will discuss the recent developments of this paradigm and the observational inputs that can confirm or discard it. More specifically I will discuss at length the process of particle acceleration in SNRs and the delicate connection between accelerated particles and cosmic rays detected at Earth. Once chemical composition is included in the theory, plenty of consequences appear both on the bulk of cosmic rays and on the end of the Galactic spectrum. I will discuss the implications of this scenario for the transition between galactic and extragalactic cosmic rays and the connection to ultra high energy cosmic rays.
